Lobby Light

We believe it is important for as many tribes as possible -- not just those in fortunate financial circumstances -- to have access to up-to-date legislative and funding information and reliable political analysis. Very few tribes can afford to monitor every piece of legislation as it moves through the committees, much less send their tribal leaders to Washington, D.C. to lobby once or twice every month. Yet it remains important for them to participate, even on a more limited basis.

In order to meet this need, we offer our information and expertise in an abridged format and for a fraction of what many tribes are currently paying their professional lobbyists (including us). In particular, we offer:

1. Timely and succinct Updates on pending and threatened Congressional legislation in such areas as housing, appropriations, gaming, natural resources and environment, transportation, budget, and taxation. These Updates, while identical to those currently online, are faxed to our clients several days before they are posted on the Internet or received by mail. They are written briefly and in simple language to keep you quickly and easily informed about the more critical issues being dealt with in Washington, D.C.

2. Weekly reports on federal agency actions and notices of available funds of interest to Indian tribes and Indian Country and that are published in the Federal Register. The application deadlines and time for comments are often short, and the Federal Register averages three hundred pages every day! These weekly reports save your time and money by digesting all this information for you.

3. Draft letters to be sent to White House officials, Senators, Representatives, and others, before critical votes and as deemed necessary. You can tailor the letters if you wish, put them on your own tribal stationery, and mail them to the individuals who are most likely to be influencing the end result. Pre-printed labels are included for easy mailing, so that each client can quickly and intelligently participate in the lobbying process . . . without leaving home and without running up large lobbying bills. While this is not the ideal way in which to make your opinions known, it is better than sitting on the bench, watching while all the decisions are being made without you.

4. An annual analysis of federal candidates, and recommendations for your political donations. We will help develop an annual plan for endorsing, supporting, and contributing to various candidates, based on your abilities and preferences. Every dollar has to count, especially for tribes with tight budgets.

Of course, these services do not include our lobbying on your behalf in Washington, D. C., nor do they include the many other services we offer in developing a comprehensive tribal strategy. But if this more limited approach appeals to you and your budget, we would be very happy to talk to you further. Just give us a call.
