Firm Résumé
"In Indian Country and on the Hill"

Legi\X Company is an innovative lobbying firm formed in 1997 to supplement the services of its sister company, Stetson Law Offices, P.C. Legi\X offers an extensive range of services in the areas of political and legislative advocacy, consulting, and fundraising for tribes, tribal agencies, and other entities. We work with our clients to devise legislative and political strategies that best fit their needs and provide regular, detailed updates on what is happening in the courts, Congress, and the Administration, as well as at the state level and with the various independent commissions, councils, and associations that affect Indian Country. We are particularly interested and involved in the budget and appropriations process, as well as in tribal sovereignty issues, Indian gaming, economic development, education (including school construction), housing, and land-into-trust. Our mission is to provide opportunities to help improve the quality of life for tribes and their members by ensuring that they have the support they need from federal, state, and local governments.

Examples of some of our legislative successes include:

1. assisting a tribal client to regain over 5,000 acres of its ancestral lands through a legislated negotiation on the Baca Ranch

2. assisting Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute obtain state, federal, and private funding for building its new advanced technology center

3. passing legislation to allow a tribal client to invest its trust funds with a private investment firm, rather than BIA

4. assisting in securing an additional $30 million for Indian housing

5. restoring funding to Institute of American Indian Art

6. successfully lobbying for gaming tribes on compact issue on both the national and local level and in 2001 resulting in new compacts with the State of New Mexico

7. successfully lobbying the New Mexico State Legislature in 2003 to defeat anti–Indian racetrack expansion legislation

8. lobbying the New Mexico State Legislature to defeat all anti-Indian cigarette and gasoline tax legislation

9. assisting the Auburn Rancheria in gaining a favorable decision from the Department of Interior to acquire lands in trust for gaming purposes under the restored lands exception of Section 20 of IGRA

10. successfully lobbying on behalf of housing clients for amendments to improve and reauthorize NAHASDA

11. helping to defeat the Pombo bill in 2006, which bill sought to restrict the acquisition of lands for tribal gaming.

Legi\X uses the experience and knowledge of a variety of individuals, including attorneys, former legislators and staffers, fundraisers, and campaign specialists, to provide the widest range of service to our clients. In addition, unlike most other lobbying firms, our home base is in the heart of Indian Country. Though we are engaged and known on Capitol Hill, our presence in Indian Country allows us to stay in close touch with tribal leaders, tribal councils, and other local contacts, ensuring that our efforts reflect our clients’ thoughts and wishes.
